I have an admission to make here. I am a perfectionist and I fear failure. I am sure that none of you can relate to that, but, it has been a struggle for me most of my life. So, when my fellow photographer and friend, Christa, emailed me several months back announcing to me that she was pregnant for the fourth time and had decided that they wanted to capture this birth in photographs and wanted ME to do it, my first response was pretty much, “no.” 🙂 At the time, I had never photographed a birth and I was a little afraid of the unknowns…could I capture it artistically, could I handle the intensity of a birthing room, could I handle poor lighting situations….? A lot of questions as to whether or not I could hack it. Thankfully, Christa was not easily swayed. Over a few emails she had convinced me to give it a try. So, God, knowing that I am a perfectionist, decided to give me many opportunities between then and now to be involved in quite a few births…as helpers and as a photographer, and my world has opened up to a new love! Birth Photography. Who would’ve thought? So, this is the first ever Chelle Nicole Photography Birth Photo Post! Excited? Yep…me too! I strive to keep this blog post very family friendly and I believe that this post doesn’t go against that at all, but just in case any of you might not really want to see the actual birthing process and a few images that are a little bit graphic….now is your chance to go internet surfing! 🙂
So…Christa and Seth are not newcomers to the birthing room. In fact, this baby is number four for them! Christa and I had been in contact the whole morning of this birth because I had been, ironically, with another birthing mom for the two days prior! But, Christa was convinced that even though she was having consistent contractions, she was not really in labor because there was NO pain! Lucky her! Eventually though, her doctor, who knows that she is an incredible baby maker, had her go to the hospital anyone. And, when I joined them it was a festive atmosphere. Christa was laughing and calm…even able to chat say goodnight to all three of her girls on the phone as she was going through contractions.
The baby was being monitored and on paper looked great!Fluids were started.A little bit of instructions and joking from the nurse. And some incredible support from her husband, Seth and her mother-in-law. Something that stood out to me hugely was a moment that Christa was chatting with the nurse and I saw her furrow her brow for a quick second. I glanced at the monitor and could see she was in a contraction, as I heard Seth, who had been sitting in a chair in the corner letting people know they were having a baby by text, jump up and go take Christa’s hand as she kept listening to the nurse talk. She smiled and kept chatting and the nurse left the room. Seth said, “that was pretty bad, huh?” Christa smiled. WOW! One not only was it amazing that she has such a high tolerance for pain, but that Seth had seen and reacted so quickly to the small little sign of pain. I was impressed with him! We went through about another half hour of contractions and she was given a little bit of meds and then…miraculously it was time. Christa has a history of quick births…but, this was amazing to see! Also fun….Dad was going to be doing the delivery!Assisted, of course, by this fun and very easy going Dr. McDonald. She has delivered Seth and Christina’s other kids….all girls…and was a great addition to the atmosphere of the room! Christa gave one good push and then…WOW…Here came the baby! I know, lucky!! Dad beamed through the whole thing…and when the baby was in his hands let out a laugh and said, “we have a son!”I loved Christa’s face! Such excitement and even surprise! They had their first boy!
Bennett Cole was placed on her chest and Dad went to work at cutting the cord.Bennett was happy to just hang with mom in the midst of all the chaos…so calm.
And, mom was just radiant!Love seeing these women with their little ones for the first time!Seth was a proud husband and dad! Then, he was quickly wrapped up and sadly taken from his warm little spot on mom….…time to be examined, weighed (8.2lbs), and printed! Then, he got so sunbathe under the warmer for a while, which he didn’t mind…
…and chatted with dad a bit.
So cute!He also let us know that he was not exactly happy about not being with mom anymore!Dad gave him his first bath….…which he also didn’t seem to mind.Got his first pic with the good Dr.!
And, then got to go back to his mom again!Where she ooh’d and aah’d over her little boy! And, he got his first late night snack! The first of MANY, I am sure! Then he got wrapped up like a little burrito and was ready for some close-ups….man, what a day!Bennett Cole FrederickTime for some family photos…which were up on Facebook in no time!Love this shot…And, this one!
